Combining powerful, 128-bit encryption with a uniquely non-invasive design, PrivacyMaker works the way YOU do. No need to move or copy files into different folders or change anything in the way you currently store information. PrivacyMaker secures your files wherever you normally keep them, eliminating the hassles of reorganizing or rearranging your files. PrivacyMaker's session-based style of privacy is what makes it so easy to use. Just open a Secure Session and your private data is right where you left it. With a single click you can secure additional files or entire folders at any time. Open your normal web browser and any favorites/bookmarks that are added and all History data that is accumulated are only available within a Secure Session. Close your Secure Session and your personal content vanishes and is instantly inaccessible. Open another Secure Session and all your private data is back. This Install Program is used to install, reinstall, upgrade and remove the PrivacyMaker program. The options vary as follows: Installing Webroot's PrivacyMaker for the first time - If the Install Program detects that you have never installed a previous version or Trial version of the program, the only choice that appears is to Install. Upgrading Webroot's PrivacyMaker over a previous version or Trial Version - If the Install Program detects that you have a previous version or a Trial Version of Webroot's PrivacyMaker installed, you will have a choice to "Upgrade" the installation or "Remove" PrivacyMaker. (For details on removing or reinstalling Webroot's PrivacyMaker, see <a href="#uninstall">Uninstalling PrivacyMaker</a>.) If you choose to upgrade your installation, all options that apply to the new version are preserved. ReInstalling Webroot's PrivacyMaker - If the Install Program detects that you have the current version of Webroot's PrivacyMaker installed, you will have a choice to "Reinstall" the current version or "Remove" PrivacyMaker. (For details on reinstalling or removing Webroot's PrivacyMaker, see <a href="#uninstall">Uninstalling PrivacyMaker</a>.) If you choose to reinstall, all existing settings will be preserved. <hr> Note: To determine if you have the latest version of Webroot's PrivacyMaker, open the Properties window and select the Webroot Tools tab. Click the button labeled "Check for Updates" and PrivacyMaker will automatically open your web browser and connect to the Webroot web site to see if there is a newer version of PrivacyMaker available. (If you are using a Trial Version of Webroot's PrivacyMaker, this button will be labeled "Purchase PrivacyMaker".) <hr> Click Next to continue and display the PrivacyMaker End User License Agreement. Indicate your acceptance of the terms of the License Agreement by checking the "I accept the terms of this licensing agreement" box and click Next to continue. <hr> Note for Windows 2000 and XP-Pro Users... PrivacyMaker fully supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP-Pro systems. It is important though, that you abide by the following rules when you install PrivacyMaker... <ol> <li>PrivacyMaker only shows up in the profile under which you install it. For this reason you should make sure that during this installation, you are logged on as the user that intends to use PrivacyMaker.</li> <li>You should not install PrivacyMaker while logged on as a user with restricted permissions.</li> <li> If you decide to un-install (remove) PrivacyMaker, you must be logged on as the user that originally installed PrivacyMaker.</li> <li>You should only install PrivacyMaker into one profile at a time. Installing PrivacyMaker into multiple profiles has not been thoroughly tested and is not currently supported.</li> </ol> <hr> <a name="select_password">Selecting Your Password</a> Next, the Select your password dialog box appears. Use an easy to remember password, it can be easily changed later. You will note as you enter your password an ongoing appraisal of the potential security quality is shown. Do not lose your password. Choose a password that is sufficiently complex and that you can easily remember. For your initial installation you may wish to choose an easy password and then, after installation and familiarization with the program, select a more secure password. PrivacyMaker provides a Password Recovery feature as a last chance method to help you remember a forgotten password. However, it cannot be stated strongly enough or too many times: DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD OR YOUR SECURED DATA WILL BE LOST!!! Webroot cannot access or recover the data...it is GONE! There is no "back-door" or secret way in...it is GONE! <a name="pass_recovery_install">Password Recovery</a> PrivacyMaker provides a method to help you recover (or remember) your password in the event you DO forget it. Enable Password Recovery Support - RECOMMENDED. Leave this option selected and click Next to configure Password Recovery Support. Like other PrivacyMaker options, this may be changed later if you feel you want the additional security and are confident you will ALWAYS be able to recall your password. To configure Password Recovery, select a question from the drop-down list or you may choose to type in a question of your own to which only YOU know the answer. Then enter your answer and choose how much of your password you would like to have displayed as a reminder. For additional configuration options, including when and if Password Recovery is used, see the <a href="#configure_pass_recovery">Configuring Password Recovery Support</a> options on the <a href="#password_settings">Password Settings</a> tab inside the program. <a name="user_appear">Setting User Appearance Options</a> By default, PrivacyMaker creates a Start Menu program group and a desktop shortcut icon. If you wish to have a stealth appearance and do not wish to have these items created, uncheck the appropriate option. These options can be modified at any time after the installation process by modifying the settings on the <a href="#advanced_setup"> Advanced Options</a> tab within PrivacyMaker Properties. <a name="windows_appear">Setting Windows Appearance Options</a> By default, PrivacyMaker appears in the Installed Programs section of Windows. (The Add Remove Programs section of your Control Panel). If you wish to enhance your stealth appearance and do not wish to have this entry created, uncheck the option. the check box. This option can be modified at any time after the installation process by modifying the setting on the <a href="#advanced_setup"> Advanced Options</a> tab within PrivacyMaker Properties. The PrivacyMaker Installation Program now has all the information it needs to begin copying PrivacyMaker onto your computer. To open your Secure Session, double-click on the padlock icon in the Windows' System Tray or Notification Area (next to the clock) or, if you did not choose any stealth appearance options when you first installed, you may run PrivacyMaker from the Programs section of the Windows' Start Menu or by double-clicking the icon on the desktop. Any of these options will open the Open Secure Session password box. <hr> NOTE: Stealth features, such as whether or not Webroot's PrivacyMaker appears in the Programs section of the Start menu, the Add/Remove Programs list in Windows or displays an icon on the desktop, can be modified at any time from within the <a href="#install_config">Installation Configuration</a> options on the <a href="#advanced_setup">Advanced Options</a> tab. <hr> Enter your password and press OK to open your Secure Session. The padlock icon will be replaced by a yellow hourglass icon, indicating that PrivacyMaker is opening your Secure Session. When your Secure Session is open, the hourglass icon will change to an open padlock and CLOSE SESSION will be displayed next to it. The "CLOSE SESSION" indicator is only displayed when your Secure Session is fully open. The first time you open your Secure Session you will be prompted to configure your secure web browser. Refer to the next section, <a href = "#browser_configuration">Browser Configuration</a>, for detailed steps. If you double-click on the CLOSE SESSION indicator in the Windows' System Tray it will bring up the Close Session verification dialog box. Refer to the <a href = "#session_setup">Session Setup</a> section for further information on opening and closing your Secure Sessions. <hr> Caution: While closing your Secure Session (the yellow hourglass icon is visible), do NOT shut down or reboot your system until the yellow hourglass has been replaced by the normal icon showing that PrivacyMaker has completed closing the Secure Session. When the Secure Session has closed you will see the padlock (default) icon in your system tray. <hr> <a name="properties">PrivacyMaker Properties</a> By default, Webroot's PrivacyMaker's Properties window opens the first time you open a Secure Session. All of PrivacyMaker's options and behaviors are managed from this window, using a series of 12 "tabs" for each group of related options. Each of these tabs is explained in detail below. One of these tabs, labeled "<a href="#session_setup">Session Setup</a>" has an option to control whether or not the Properties window itself is opened when you open a Secure Session. Use your browser as you normally do and PrivacyMaker keeps all added Favorites, History Files and Cookies separate from your normal (non-Secure) browsing sessions. The first time you open your Secure Session you will be asked to configure your Internet browser. Press Yes to start the configuration process. PrivacyMaker searches your system for all supported web browsers and displays the results. Select an Internet browser and click OK to run the Secure Browser Configuration Wizard and configure your options for your Favorites, History list and your Cookies. <hr> NOTE: When a Secure Session is open, PrivacyMaker ISOLATES any Favorites, History and Cookies that are created so they are only visible and available within another Secure Session and are completely unavailable when you use your browser normally. <hr> <tt>Favorites list</tt> Select one option. <ol> <li>Start off with my Secured Favorites list exactly the same as my normal Favorites list.</li> <li>Start off with my Secured Favorites list empty and my normal Favorites list just as it is now.</li> <li>Start off with my Secured Favorites list exactly the same as my normal Favorites list and clear my normal Favorites list.</li> </ol> <tt>History list</tt> Select one option. <ol> <li>Start off with my Secured History list exactly the same as my normal History list.</li> <li>Start off with my Secured History list empty and my normal History list just as it is now.</li> <li>Start off with my Secured History list exactly the same as my normal History list and clear my normal History list.</li> <li>Start off by CLEARING my History list. Both my normal and my Secured History list will be empty.</li> </ol> <tt>Cookies</tt> Select one option. <ol> <li>Start off with my Secured Cookies exactly the same as my normal Cookies.</li> <li>Start off with my Secured Cookies empty and my normal Cookies just as they are now.</li> <li>Start off with my Secured Cookies exactly the same as my normal Cookies and clear my normal Cookies list.</li> <li>Start off by ERASING any Cookies. Both my normal and my Secured Cookies list will be empty.</li> </ol> Congratulations. Your secured browser is now configured and ready for use. If at any time you wish to change your configuration settings, you may do so by following the directions in the next section. At the conclusion of your browser configuration, the PrivacyMaker Browser Configuration page is displayed, showing the default settings for the browser. When your Secure Session is open you will be using your secured browser. Only YOU will see your secured browser's Favorites, History and Cookies. When your Secure Session is closed, only your normal browser activities will show. Your secure browser information will not be visible to anyone. <hr> <a name="browser_changing">Changing Your Secure Browser</a> Selecting the Browser Configuration tab in PrivacyMaker Properties displays the current browser configuration. To change your browser selection click on the "Change" button and select a different browser. NOTE: Before securing a new browser, any currently secured browser must be released. Click OK to initiate the process. <a name="browser_releasing">Releasing Your Secure Browser</a> After you select the browser that you wish to change to, the Secure Browser Configuration Wizard will start. You should now choose either to Merge your secure browser information back into your unsecured (normal) browser or to Permanently Erase your secure browser information. Selecting Merge will combine your secured Favorites, History and Cookies with your normal browser. Selecting Permanently Erase will erase all of your secure browser Favorites, History and Cookies. TIP: You may want to export important favorites and import them after you configure a new secure browser. After you release your previously secured browser you will need to select the configuration options for your newly selected browser. Follow the steps listed above, outlining the initial configuration of your browser. When you have completed all of your selections you will see the "Congratulations" dialog confirming that your secured browser is now configured and ready for use. Press Finish to complete your configuration. At the conclusion of changing your browser and selecting the configuration options the PrivacyMaker Browser Configuration tab is displayed, showing the default settings for your browser. <ul> <li>Secure my history list. (I will have a private history list for my open session.)</li> <li>Secure my favorites. (I will have a private favorites list for my open session.)</li> <li>Secure my cookies. (I will have a private set of cookies for my open session.)</li> </ul> These permanent default settings cannot be changed. They are integral elements of your secured browser. The Browser configuration options for When I open my secure session are. <ul> <li>Run My Web Browser. (You may deselect this option if you do not wish to run your browser when you open your Secure Session.)</li> <li>If my Web Browser is already running, close it first. (Cannot be changed. PrivacyMaker will always close any unsecure browser that is open before opening a Secure Browser Session.)</li> </ul> The Browser configuration options for When I close my secure session are. <ul> <li>If my Web Browser is running, close it. (Cannot be changed. This ensures that your Secure Session information cannot be seen by others.)</li> <li>Make sure that all of the files that got downloaded into my cache while my Secure Session was open are deleted. (If you wish, you may uncheck this option to retain your cache.)</li> <li>Make sure that my Web browser's history list is cleared of all Internet addresses (URLs) that I visited while my Secure Session was open. Your files, documents and folders--all of your secure content--is viewable only by you. You can secure any type of file you desire: text, still images, video, sound...anything can be secured. Regardless of the file type, extension, or size, PrivacyMaker can make it private. <ul> <li>Your documents, files and folders remain in their original locations <li>All files and folders are hidden from view, making your personal content impossible to find <li>File access is locked, to prevent personal content from being viewed. Two additional security options offer even greater security: <ul> <li>CODED (encrypted) making personal content unreadable <li>HOT, you can wipe selected items out with the quick delete and severe situation Quick Delete icons.</li> </ul></li> </ul> <a name="adding_secure_things">Adding Files to My Secure Things</a> There are a couple of ways to secure your files or folders in PrivacyMaker. Right-click on the file or folder you wish to secure, then select Make Secure from the pop-up menu. This will add the item to the My Secure Things list. (The Make Secure menu option is configurable on the Program Appearance tab.) Another way to secure files is to simply drag-and-drop them in the My Secure Things window. In order to add files and folders to My Secure Things, they must reside on a fixed hard drive in your system. If you attempt to add files or folders from floppy drives or other removable media, you will receive a notice informing you that the requested action cannot be performed. If you attempt to add a file or folder that is already in your list of My Secure Things, PrivacyMaker alerts you. <hr> IMPORTANT: There are certain files which cannot be secured. Files essential to the Operating System, specifically files which are contained in the Windows folder and its sub folders cannot be secured. Individual program files while contained within the Program Files folder cannot be secured. However, individual program files not contained in the Program Files folder may be secured. Files and folders within the My Documents folder may be secured, however the "My Documents" folder itself may not. <hr> On the My Secure Things tab you will find the list of all the files and folders that you have secured, along with several buttons: <ul> <li>The Default Settings button enables you to set options on how new content is secured</li> <li>The Remove Item button removes selected file or folder from the My Secure Things list (it is NOT removed from your disk, it is simply unsecured and available for anyone to access)</li> <li>The Item Security button displays the security attributes of a highlighted file or folder and enables you to modify the attributes for that individual file or folder</li> <li>The Launch button enables you to open the selected file</li> <li>The Browse button enables you to view the contents of the folders you have in My Secure Things</li> </ul> <a name="security_settings">My Secure Things Security Settings</a> You may modify the secure attributes of any item by highlighting the desired item and then selecting the Default Settings button at the bottom of the window. This will open the Default Item Security Settings dialog box so you can modify the settings. <ul> <li>HIDDEN - When checked, the file will not appear in any browser or open/save dialog boxes <li>LOCKED - When checked, the file can not be opened by editing or viewing programs <li>CODED - When checked, it is encrypted using 128-bit encryption and is illegible to any viewing or editing programs <li>HOT - When checked, you can wipe this file out with the quick delete and severe delete Quick Access Icons</li> </ul> By default, new items are secured as HIDDEN and LOCKED. We strongly recommend these settings remain as default and that the selection of the Attributes CODED and HOT be done individually on selected files that require the additional security. <hr> Note: Every time you open a Secure Session in PrivacyMaker, the program momentarily pegs the CPU consumption at 100% as PrivacyMaker validates your secure content. Any content marked as CODED is also processed by the encryption algorithm. While PrivacyMaker's encryption algorithm is fast by standards, it is still a complex algorithm that takes a fair amount of time. You should therefore give careful consideration to which files you choose to have CODED. The more files you set to CODED, the longer it takes PrivacyMaker to open and close your Secure Session. Depending on the power of the processor and the speed of the drive, this could add approximately one second of time for every five Megabytes [5,242,880 bytes] of file size. <hr> <a name="removing_secure_things">Removing Files from My Secure Things</a> To remove files or folders from your My Secure Things list, simply click on the item to be removed and then click once on the Remove button to complete the action. This only removes the item from the secured list, making it available to When removing a secured item, PrivacyMaker provides an option to PERMANENTLY ERASE the item after removing it from your list. This option will DELETE the file from your disk and it CANNOT BE RECOVERED. Use this option with care. <a name="recover_secure_things">Recovering Moved or Missing Secure Things</a> If a Secure Session is open and you use Windows' Explorer to delete or move items that are in your My Secure Things list and do not modify PrivacyMaker to reflect this change, you will receive a notice when closing your Secure Session that PrivacyMaker was unable to locate the item. You may choose to remove the item from the list, or have PrivacyMaker attempt to locate the item. If you elect to have PrivacyMaker locate the item, the program will search your hard drives and display a list of matching items. To restore the item to your list of My Secure Things, in the new location to which it has been moved, simply select "Recover" and the item will be secured in it's new location. In the event the search did not display the location of the recovered item you may select the Browse button to locate the file yourself. One click of the securely stored URL takes you to your subscribed web site. Select the My Subscriptions tab in PrivacyMaker Properties. To start entering data for each subscription, click on the New button. To move between fields, simply press the Tab key or click on the field with the mouse pointer. Selecting subscriptions to view can be accomplished using the < Prev and Next > buttons. <ul> <li>To visit the subscribed web site, single-click on the URL</li> <li>To enter data for a new subscription, click the New button</li> <li>To modify the current entry, click the Edit button</li> <li>To remove the selection, click the Remove button</li> </ul> Subscriptions List by enables you to display your Subscriptions by: <ul> <ul> <li>Created - the date and time the entry was created</li> <li>Description - a simple description of the entry</li> <li>URL - the specific site address, such as: http://www.webroot.com</li> <li>Account Reference - free-form field for data related to this entry</li> <li>User Name - the user name required to logon to the web site</li> <li>Password - the password required to log on to the web site</li> <li>Comments - any additional comments about the entry</li> <li>Start Date - the starting date of the current subscription entry</li> <li>Period - the length of the subscription term expressed in months or days</li> <li>Price - the cost of the subscription for the term</li> </ul> </ul> For each subscription you may elect to receive a renewal notice or to have the secure subscription information removed when it expires. To move to other fields, simply use the Tab key or the mouse pointer to activate the cursor in the desired area. Click the Apply button to save the new information and press the Esc key to cancel adding or editing an entry. Enter your password as normal to open your Secure Session. 2. Don't show Tool Tips when the cursor is over the program icon unless your secure session is open. This keeps the icon from revealing what program it belongs to. 3. Selection of the optional icon. The default system tray Icon is the padlock. To change this selection, select the radio button below the icon you wish to change to and then click on the "Apply" button. <hr> Note: When you select the Blank icon a dialog box will inform you that the Blank icon is invisible that this increased level of security also makes it more difficult to locate the icon to open your Secure Session. If you are unsure where the Blank icon is when trying to open your Secure Session, look for an abnormally wide space between icons next to the clock display. <hr> <a name="context_menus">File and Folder Context Menus</a> This option affects the display of the "Make Secure" option on the right-click context menu. This option enables you to right-click on any file and, by choosing Make Secure from the pop-up menu, immediately add that file to the My Secure Things list. The three choices are: <ol> <ol> <li>Always show "Make Secure" on file and folder right click context menus. This is the least "stealthy" setting as anyone who uses your computer and sees the "Make Secure" option can assume that you must have something to hide. However, it is also the most convenient as you can quickly add files to My Secure Things without first opening a Secure Session.</li> <li>Only show "Make Secure" on file and folder right click context menus when my Secure Session is open. This is the default setting and provides an equal combination of stealth and convenience. </li> <li>Never show "Make Secure" on file and folder right click context menus. Very "stealthy" but not as convenient. The default for opening your Secure Session is to double-click with the left mouse button on the padlock icon in the Windows System Tray (Notification Area). You may enhance that by adding the requirement that a keyboard character be depressed while double-clicking to open your Secure Session. To enable, select the checkbox to the left of the option and then scroll up or down through the listing of keyboard characters. After selecting the character of your choice, click on the Apply button at the bottom of the Properties display. To Open your Secure Session using keystrokes, select the checkbox to the left of the option and then scroll up or down through the listing of keyboard characters. After selecting the character of your choice, click on the Apply button at the bottom of the Properties display. Activating this option will also enable you to open the PrivacyMaker Properties using keystrokes while your Secure Session is open. By default your PrivacyMaker Properties Window will be opened each time you open your Secure Session. To change this behavior, simply uncheck this option. If unchecked, you can display the Properties Window when your Secure Session is open by simply right-clicking on the open padlock icon in the Windows System Tray / Notification Area next to the clock. <a name="session_close">Closing a Secure Session</a> PrivacyMaker provides a number of options to affect how your Secure Session is closed. When closing your Secure Session the default setting is to bring up a verification dialog. This dialog can be suppressed by unchecking this option. To reinstate the verification dialog box, simply recheck this option. PrivacyMaker automatically closes your Secure Session if your screen saver activates. You may keep your Secure Session open during screen saver activity by unchecking this option. PrivacyMaker normally clears your Start Menus' Documents List when you close your Secure Session. If you wish to retain the items listed in your Start Menus' Documents List, uncheck this option. To Close your Secure Session using keystrokes, select the checkbox to the left of the option and then scroll up or down through the listing of keyboard characters. After selecting the character of your choice, click on the Apply button at the bottom of the Properties display. While this is both easy and convenient, if your specific needs require more flexible operation, PrivacyMaker features an advanced operations mode called the Enhanced Session Access Mode, which provides you with more detailed control over your Secure Session. Additionally, PrivacyMaker can be configured to be virtually invisible on your computer. You control if a program group or desktop icon is displayed and even if PrivacyMaker is listed in WindowsÆ Add/Remove program list. These options are discussed in the <a href="#install_config">PrivacyMaker Installation Configuration</a> section below. <a name="esam">Enhanced Session Access Mode</a> The benefit of the Enhanced Session Access Mode is that you can separate the security from the session itself. This provides tremendous flexibility in how you can interact with your secure data. To activate the Enhanced Session Access Mode of PrivacyMaker, click on the selection box on the Advanced Options tab and then click the Apply button. You will see a row of control tabs appear above the task bar at the bottom of your screen. The status of each tab is reflected by the color of the "LED" indicator on the tab: "Green" means all items are open and can be accessed; "Red" means all items are secured and not accessible; "Yellow" (on the My Secure Browser tab) means a browser has not been configured; and "Yellow" (on the My Secure Things tab) means that some items are secured and some are not. <ul> <li> Right-click on any tab for a shortcut to setting properties and getting help for that control tab, as well as options that apply to the control tab bar itself (such as "Auto-Minimize Tabs" and "Tabs Always On Top").</li> <li> Left-click on the desired control tab opens that Enhanced Session Access Control. Each of the control tabs extends the basic functionality found on the main PrivacyMaker Properties tabs of the same name.</li> </ul> <a name="browser_control">My Secure Browser Control Tab</a> See also: <a href="#browser_configuration">Browser Configuration</a> for more general details. A single left mouse click on the My Secure Browser control tab opens the browser section of the Enhanced Session Access. This tab enables you to manage your secure browsing activities INDEPENDENTLY of your Secure Session itself. Normally PrivacyMaker MUST close your unsecure browser to open a Secure Browser Session and visa versa. While very convenient, this presents a dilemma when you are surfing unsecurely and need to access secure content in PrivacyMaker...PrivacyMaker will close your browser when you open your Secure Session to access your files. Of course, you can just reopen your browser (now in secure mode) and go back to where you were surfing, but Enhanced Session Access Mode provides a better way by using the following options: The first option to consider is at the very bottom of the My Secure Browser Control: Open my Secured Browser Session whenever I open my secure session. When checked, this option works like the normal mode of PrivacyMaker. Your secure browser session is opened when you open your Secure Session itself. You may choose to not open your secured browser session by unchecking this option. This enables you to open a PrivacyMaker Secure Session without affecting the status of your current browser session. The option to Run my Secure Web Browser when I open my Secure Browser Session controls whether or not your secure browser is launched when you click the Open Secure Browser Session button. If you prefer to open a secure browser session without launching your secure browser, uncheck this option. Note: Once a secure browser session is opened, you can launch your secure browser by clicking on the large browser button. The final option is to Clear my Secure Web Browser's cache when I close my Secure Browser Session. You may choose to keep your cache by unchecking this option. <a name="secure_things_control">My Secure Things Control Tab</a> See also: <a href="#my_secure_things">My Secure Things</a> for more general details. The default setting for My Secure Things is to open all your secure things when you open your Secure Session. If you wish to open your secure things individually, uncheck this option and use the Close Item / Open Item button to open individual files or folders. <ul> <li>The Settings button will display the Default Item Security Settings</li> <li>The Remove button will display the Remove Secure Thing Confirmation Dialog</li> <li>The Security button will display the Currently Selected Item Security Settings</li> <li>The Browse button will open the selected file or folder</li> <li>The View Properties button will display the My Secure Things settings tab</li> </ul> <a name="subscription_control">My Subscriptions Control Tab</a> See also: <a href="#my_subscriptions">My Subscriptions</a> for more general details. You may uncheck this option and open your Personal Info using the advanced tab options: <ul> <li>The New button will open the Personal Info properties page so you may create a new entry</li> <li>The Edit button will open the Personal Info properties page of the selected item</li> <li>The Remove button will bring up a Remove Personal confirmation dialog to delete the selected personal entry</li> <li>The View Properties button will open the My Personal Info properties page</li> </ul> <hr> <a name="install_config">PrivacyMaker Installation Configuration</a> In the Installation Configuration you are able to control the stealth appearance of the PrivacyMaker installation itself. These options make it nearly impossible to detect that Webroot's PrivacyMaker is even installed on the computer. If you have installed PrivacyMaker using the default options, it will show up in the "Installed Programs" section of Windows, there will be a Program group in Start Menu and there will be a shortcut on your desktop. Each subsequent event will be displayed as recorded, earlier events may be viewed by selecting the Previous button. The Event Log also tracks the following: Access Attempts - The Event Log displays failed attempts to access your password alerting you to efforts to gain access to your secured content. The Event Log records the date and time of the occurrences and the Anti-Hacker actions taken. Each entry attempt will generate a separate log entry. After reviewing log entries you may elect to keep the entry or to Clear All Log Entries which will delete those not marked to keep. Secure Content Inconsistencies - Every time PrivacyMaker is started the program checks My Secure Things for all files and folders you have secured. In the event a folder or file cannot be located, the Event Log records the problem along with the last known location and name of the file. You may choose to remove the item from the list, or have PrivacyMaker attempt to locate the item. If you elect to have PrivacyMaker locate the item, the program will search your hard drives and display a list of matching items. To restore the item to your list of My Secure Things, in the new location to which it has been moved, simply select "Recover" and the item will be secured in it's new location. In the event the search did not display the location of the recovered item you may select the Browse button to locate the file yourself. <a name="clear_logs">Clearing Log Entries</a> To Clear log entries, simply deselect the Keep this record check box for each entry you wish to delete and click on the Clear All Log Entries button. An integrated Password Recovery feature helps you remember a lost password, yet does not help a hacker gain access. It cannot be stated strongly enough or too many times: DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD OR YOUR SECURED DATA WILL BE LOST!!! Webroot cannot access or recover the data...it is GONE! There is no "back-door" or secret way in...it is GONE! Your password should be more than seven characters in length. Passwords that contain letters, numerals and symbols is generally much stronger than a commonly used word. PrivacyMaker allows passwords up to 32 characters in length. During the installation process you select your initial password. To change your password at any time, select the Password Settings tab and click the Change button. A dialog box will appear for you to enter and confirm your new password. PrivacyMaker evaluates the quality of your password as you enter it. If the quality of your password is not very high, you should consider changing your password to make it harder to figure out. We suggest that you use a combination of letters, numbers and other keyboard symbols in your password. Also a longer password is always harder to figure out. But in any case, DON'T FORGET WHAT IT IS!!! NOTE: The Password Settings screen does NOT hide or encrypt your password. It can be seen by anyone looking over your shoulder. Therefore, be careful when accessing this screen if there are other people around who might try to learn your password. <a name="password_attempts">Password Attempts Settings</a> The Password Dialog Rules default setting allow 3 attempts to enter the password correctly. You may change the allowable number of attempts to a higher or lower number as you prefer. If the correct password is not entered within the specified number of attempts, you must wait for the specified time before again attempting to access the password dialog box. <a name="password_timeout">Password Timeout Settings</a> The Password Dialog Rules default setting is to require a 30 second delay before allowing the password dialog box to be accessed if the correct password is not entered within the specified number of attempts. This time value can be changed to a higher or lower value, and the unit of time option expressed in seconds, minutes or hours can be changed by clicking on the button labeled "Seconds". Each click cycles the value from seconds to minutes to hours to seconds again. IMPORTANT: Use these options with care or you could lock yourself out of your secure data for a long time if you allow only 1 attempt to enter the correct password and specify a long wait period after failed attempts. <a name="configure_pass_recovery">Configuring Password Recovery Support</a> PrivacyMaker provides a method to help you recover (or remember) your password in the event you DO forget it. Enabling Password Recovery Support. Click on the checkbox to enable or disable this option. When Password Recovery Support is enabled, you select a question from the drop-down list or you may choose to type in a question of your own that only YOU will know the answer to. Enter the corresponding answer and then choose how much of your password you would like to have displayed as a reminder. <a name="activate_pass_recovery">Activating Password Recovery Support</a> With Password Recovery Support enabled, you may choose to activate it when you have exhausted all of your password entry retries, when you double-click on the Open Session icon with your right mouse button, or both. While this is a very helpful option if you are prone to forgetting your password, it does compromise your overall security. Carefully consider when and how you use this option. PrivacyMaker considers a hacking attempt to be persistent failed attempts to gain access to your data and not simply a couple of missed entries of your password. These options help specify how many failed attempts to permit before taking action, and what action to then take. The default setting for the Anti-Hacker feature is to Carry out Anti-Hacker actions if someone is trying to access my secure content. If this option is not selected all options of the Anti-Hacker Settings tab will be disabled. With the Anti-Hacker feature enabled you have the option of reacting to failed attempts to enter both your password and your password recovery answer. You may set the number of times in a row an incorrect entry can be made before Anti-Hacker actions occur. <a name="whatsahacker">What Constitutes a Hacker</a> <ul> <li>When someone goes through exhausting all of the password retry attempts that I allow more than 3 times in a row. The "password retry attempts" are specified on the Password Settings tab. If you allow 3 attempts to enter the correct password on the Password Settings tab, and 3 retry attempts here, that means 9 failed password attempts will constitute a Hacker and take Anti-Hacker actions.</li> <li>When someone enters an incorrect answer to my password recovery question more than 3 times in a row. The "password recovery question" is specified on the Password Settings tab and is invoked after the specified number of failed password entries OR by an optional right-click on the System Tray icon.</li> </ul> You can modify the number of times a password or password recovery answer may be incorrectly entered. The default setting is 3 times in a row. <hr> IMPORTANT: Anti-Hacker options come into play AFTER the options on the Password Settings tab and the options on BOTH TABS must be considered before Anti-Hacker actions occur. For example, with the default setting on the Password Settings tab set to allow 3 attempts (the default), along with a 30 second wait before redisplaying the password dialog; AND the Password Recovery option enabled; AND with 3 retries allowed on the Anti-Hacker Settings tab, here is what happens if (someone) keeps trying and entering the wrong password: <ol> <li>After the 3 failed attempts allowed on the Password Settings tab, the Password Recovery question is posed and, if not answered correctly, the password dialog box cannot be displayed again until the 30 second delay is satisfied.</li> <li>After 3 more failed attempts, another try for Password Recovery and another 30 second delay occurs.</li> <li>After 3 more failed attempts, (the 3rd retry on the Anti-Hacker tab), the attempt is considered a hacking attempt and the Anti-Hacker actions occur.</li> </ol> <hr> <a name="antihacker_actions">Setting Anti-Hacker Actions</a> You may choose to: <ul> <li>Set the speaker volume to full, then play one of your choice of 5 Alarm Tones - Once activated, the alarm will sound continuously until the correct password is entered!!</li> <li>Lock out all keyboard and mouse controls so that the computer cannot be accessed for a length of time you specify - The default setting is to lockout all keyboard and mouse control for 30 seconds. This time value can be changed to a higher or lower value, and the unit of time option expressed in seconds, minutes or hours can be changed by clicking on the button labeled "Seconds". Each click cycles the value from seconds to minutes to hours to seconds again.</li> <li>Permanently erase any of my secured folders and files that have the 'HOT' security attribute selected.</li> <li>Permanently erase all of my secured Internet Addresses (favorites), History List entries and Cookies from my web browser. </li> </ul> <a name="hacking_notify">Hacking Notifications</a>After an incorrect password has been entered, the next time you open a Secure Session, PrivacyMaker immediately displays the Event Log with the date and time of the occurrences and the Anti-Hacker actions taken. All incorrect password entry attempts are recorded in the Event Log and each attempt will generate a separate log entry. PrivacyMaker will warn you of the implications of your settings and ask you to confirm your selections before proceeding. To Generate a Log file of the Diagnostic you have just run, click on the "Generate a Log File" button and choose a location and name for the file; then click on the Save button to save the Log File. These log files may be requested for use by Technical Support To Recover Hidden Items (secured content) that you can no longer open using normal procedures, click on the "Recover Hidden Items" button and you will receive the notice that recovering hidden items (secure content) will result in these items being no longer tracked by PrivacyMaker. If you continue, PrivacyMaker's Diagnostics will create a folder named Recovered Hidden Files and all your recovered hidden items will be moved into that folder on the drive where the content was originally located. After they have been recovered you will need to move them from their recovered folder to the folder of your choice and secure them again. <hr> Checking for Updates Click the button labeled "Check for Updates" and PrivacyMaker will automatically open your web browser and connect to the Webroot web site to see if there is a newer version of PrivacyMaker available. Depending on how you have the program configured, use one of the following methods: 1. If you kept (and never subsequently changed) the default settings, you simply go to the Windows Start menu and locate the PrivacyMaker program group (normally located inside the Webroot program group menu) and choose the Uninstall PrivacyMaker option. 2. If you have unchecked the option to create a PrivacyMaker Program Group, you go to the Start Menu->Control Panel and choose the Add/Remove Programs. Click on PrivacyMaker in the list of installed programs and then click the Uninstall button. 3. If you have also unchecked the option to display PrivacyMaker in the Add/Remove program list, there are still TWO ways to uninstall the program: <ul> <li>Open a Secure Session and change one of the above options, enabling you to use that method to uninstall</li> <li>Rerun the original PrivacyMaker Installation Program</li> </ul> All of these uninstall methods result in the same procedure. A dialog box will open advising that Webroot's PrivacyMaker is currently installed on your computer and asking that you choose an option: <ul> <li>Remove PrivacyMaker from my computer</li> <li>Reinstall PrivacyMaker on my computer</li> </ul> If you choose "Reinstall", the original installation is repeated and all preferences are retained. NOTE: The rest of this section details the "Remove" option. If you choose "Remove", Webroot's PrivacyMaker requires you to enter your password to uninstall the program and restore (unsecure) your secured content. This prevents an unauthorized person from running the uninstall procedure in an attempt to access your secure data or uninstall the program so that YOU can no longer access your data. <hr> IMPORTANT: If you wish to uninstall Webroot's PrivacyMaker AND YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN YOUR PASSWORD, it is possible to remove the program but any personal content you have secured WILL BE LOST!! If you have forgotten your password, see the next section, called <a href="#forgotten_password">Uninstalling PrivacyMaker Without A Password.</a> <hr> After correctly entering your password, you will be presented with options for handling your various secured content, subscriptions and personal info, browser favorites and so on. You may selectively choose to keep or PERMANENTLY ERASE these various groups of information by checking the appropriate boxes during the uninstall procedure. After your selections and confirmations, Webroot's PrivacyMaker will be completely removed from your computer and a summary screen lists how your personal information was handled. If you have truly forgotten your password, click on the "I Forgot My Password" button during the uninstall procedure (see <a href="#uninstall">Uninstalling PrivacyMaker</a> in the previous section.) If you have enabled the Password Recovery feature (recommended), you will be prompted for an answer to the personal question you created, giving you ONE LAST CHANCE to recall your password. If you have NOT implemented this feature, here are your options now: If you have important data secured, then take your time...give yourself time to try and recall your password as making other choices here are not reversible and any data you have secured will be lost unless you can recall your password. Webroot's PrivacyMaker is VERY SECURE, with no back doors...there is no way to recover your data if you have indeed forgotten your password.If you do NOT have important data secured, or if you don't care about losing the data or if you have an alternate copy somewhere else, there is a way to remove Webroot's PrivacyMaker without a password, however all secured data will be permanently erased. This process will require you to contact Webroot Technical Support Services and provide specific information about your PrivacyMaker installation and proof of ownership.
